Apple starts its own podcast every day. The company announced the show today along with other audio story news coming to Apple News, curated local Apple News collections, and the release of iOS 13.6. The show is called Apple News todayis moderated by Apple News editors Shumita Basu and Duarte Geraldino. New episodes, which will be seven to eight minutes long, will be released Monday through Friday. The show will be available exclusively through Apple News and Apple Podcasts in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Apple will also publish 20 audio stories per week through Apple News Plus. The stories are told by professional actors, and long-form pieces are told that are published by well-known outlets Esquire, GQ, new York Magazine and Vanity Fair. Only Apple News Plus subscribers have access. Both these stories as well Apple News today are accessible from the Audio tab at the bottom of the Messages app. CarPlay also supports these audio features so users can hear them while driving.
In non-audio news, Apple claims to publish curated local news in the Bay Area, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Each of these newspapers will include a major newspaper in the region and will report on local community news. A subscription to Apple News Plus in the United States now includes access to The Charlotte observer, the Idaho statesman, The Kansas City Star, the Miami Herald, The News & Observer, and The State. In Canada, Le Devoir will also be available to Apple News Plus subscribers The globe and the post.
The biggest news is Apple News today. This is Apple's first major foray into podcast production, and the daily news format is particularly crowded. The New York Times publishes its popular program The dailywhile Vox Media released Explained today and The Wall Street Journal Has The diary, among other. Even more remarkable is the fact that Apple makes its show exclusively for Apple.
So far, Apple has been the face of the open podcast ecosystem, especially when compared to Spotify, which has focused on well-known exclusive podcast deals to expand its platform. Apple, on the other hand, has not signed exclusive contracts and instead promotes the work of other manufacturers in its curated lists. This could be the beginning of Apple's serious entry into podcasting.
